The emasculation of the superintendent of police was a defining feature of the last Mulayam government. In what has been described as its “goonda raj”, the independence and efficacy of the police administration was systematically chipped away to ensure political bosses held sway. For the aam aadmi, if he fell out of political favour, there was no recourse as the thana was virtually outsourced to ruling party toughies and strongmen. When Mayawati was voted to power in 2007, her mandate came riding not on the back of the innovative “social engineering” attributed to the BSP chief, but on the widely shared revulsion against a regime that

Fathers, sons - and some others We Indians love our families - and our politics. Logically then, we can sometimes mix the two up - hence our enduring passion for family politics! From the pre-historic Mahabharata, where Kaurava and Pandava cousins dramatically broke bones over gaddis, to the here-and-now, when television soaps portray gleaming mums-in-laws pitched against glittering bahus. ..Take the Badal clan in Punjab. Although the family's main branch made history in recent polls, becoming the first incumbent government re-elected to power, they had to slug it out with disaffected relative Manpreet Singh Badal. Power revolving around his cousin and Badal heir, Sukhbir Singh, Manpreet left the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) in pouty sadness, starting his reformist PPP - which was so anti-populist in tone as to fall off the popularity charts itself....Voter attention was certainly captured by the Congress's first family campaigning busily in UP. Unfortunately, that attention didn't translate into votes. But we got an eyeful, with Rahul baba first paratrooping in, followed by sister Priyanka. Definitely no Behenji, Priyanka described herself as a barsaati mendak, a seasonal frog appearing occasionally. If my sister's a frog, so am i, declared Rahul with a straight face. What does that make Robert Vadra then?...There's just one political group not singing that number after these surprising elections - the Samajwadis, where son Akhilesh wrested victory for pitaji, sorry, netaji from the shadows of stone statues clutching power like handbags. Akhilesh rallied voters round with promises to deliver develop-ment over identity politics and instability. As the dust settles, let's see if what papa kehte hain about the lad is true - or if this turns out to be yet another family drama.
